Charuchandra Bandyopadhyay, one of Rabindranath’s close followers writes in ‘Rabirashmi’ –

… We, quite a few people had gathered at Bolpur for enacting a play. Most probably that was ‘Raaja’. It was spring time, moonlit night. All the men and women present had been to Paaruldaanga, a beautiful place. Only I had stayed back, in order to avoid sleepless night. … Deep in the night, I woke up, a mellow voice singing a delightful song drifting across what appeared from the lawn below Shantiniketan building. I climbed on the rooftop to find below it was Gurudev; he was strolling across the open space, flooded with moonlight, and murmuring a song. Tiptoed, I went down, barefooted. I went close to Him, however he did not see me, He was completely lost and continued singing. I followed Him as he strolled. I was keen to discover the lyrics of the song as He kept His voice very low. He was singing – ‘Aaj Jyotsnaraate Sobai Gechhe Bone …’. After a considerable time He stopped and spoke lightly – ‘Oh Charu!’

I touched His Feet. In the same light tone He advised me – ‘Go, please go to bed.’

I could well feel that He intended to be alone. I left the place.

Perhaps the same incedent has been described by Amol Hom in his book ‘Purushottam Rabindranath’ –

… Long time ago. I had been to Shantiniketan with my big-brotherlike, late Charuchandra Bandyopadhyay. The poet had been staying in Shantiniketan, the old building erected by the Maharshi himself. It is called the ‘Old Guest House’. We had talked with the poet for a while before retiring to bed after dinner. He had slept in the small room on the first floor, left side of the staircase. He always chose the smaller one. I and Charubabu shared the bigger one. Suddenly I woke up in the mid night, Charuda calling, said – ‘Can you hear?’

I clearly heard, it was the poet’s voice. We left our bed; the wide spread field around Shantiniketan was inundated with sparkling moonlight; the poet was sitting on a white stone stool on the roof of the portico, he was singing a song. Charuda and I tiptoed across and crouched behind the poet. After a while we could understand that a new song is being composed with the lyrics being matched up with melody. The song was – ‘Aaj Jyotsnaraate Sobai Gechhe Bone…’.
