Notes: This song was published in the year 1877 in the Nov edition of 'Bharati'. Prior to his journey to England for the first time this song was written while his brief stay with his elder brother (Mej-dada), Satyendranath Tagore at Ahmadabad. This is one of the earliest songs of Rabindranath. Satyendranath used to stay in a palatial Shahibag building, an accommodation provided by the government. This song had a heading 'Golapbala (Golaper proti bulbul)' and raag indication 'Behag'. Reference of this song is found in 'Jibonsmriti' -
... I had occupied a room near the cliff of the house. A hive of gnats had shared the room. I used to sleep alone at night. Sometimes in the dark some of them would land on my bed. It was not at all a good feeling for them when I would turn and changed position. And it was a matter of strong dislike for me either. I used to walk around on the roof of the building enjoying moonlit night all alone. At this time I had composed a few songs for the first time among which the one 'Boli O Aamar 'Golapbala ...' has secured a place in my collection of poetry. ...
This song had gained a good popularity at least within Thakurbari. Gunendranath Tagore, father of Abanindranath Tagore would ask Rabindranath to sing the song while Jyotirindranath would accompany him on the harmonium. This reference was found in 'Ghoroa' a biography written by Abanindranath. He also explains how much Thakurbari used to favour this song and particularly how often requests would follow for it.
In this song Teevra-Madhyam has been left out and both Suddha and Komal Nishad has been included, which is a characteristic feature of raag Behagara.
