Notes: This song was composed on 24th August, 1913 at London, about three months prior to the day when he had received the news of achieving the Nobel Prize. Kalidas Nag in his memoire ‘Gaayok Rabindranath’, writes –
… we sat with him at the center, Manomohan Ghosh at one side and the Chancellor Brojendranath Sil at the other. We all started pressing him to sing a song. His did sing the song ‘ E Monihaar Aamay Naahi Saaje …’, but the reason behind selecting this song was revealed a lot later. …
In a letter written to Bankimchandra Ray Rabindranath had written –
… I don’t feel like staying here anymore. I sincerely feel that my job is finished. When jobs appear to be mightier than devotion then it is time to brush it aside and leave the scene. I feel my time has come. I feel the rush to return …
This part of the letter elaborates the state of mind, the conflicting emotions between acheivement and rejection that was prevailing within his mind while he was being praised from all corners prior to receiving the Nobel Prize in the year 1913. This song was in fact written couple of months prior to the Prize giving ceremony.
