Shailajaranjan Majumdar, in his memoire ‘Jatrapother Aanondogan’ has written –
… Dignified ladies were not supposed to appear on a public stage those days [1932] for singing songs. Girls, while celebrating Rabindra-jayanti had sung songs at Nertokona [Shailajaranjan’s home town]. I had taught a young girl to sing ‘Knadale tumi more bhaalobasari ghaaye …’ for which I had to face enough of criticism. A weekly paper had commented that – it was not a good thing I have done to make an unmarried girl to sing such an unedifying song. Gurudev, learning the incident had exclaimed – ‘O dear, what have you done? You are fortunate enough for not having your throat slit.’ …
