Mary Van Eeghen, a Dutch millionaire lady, had been the hostess for Rabindranath in September, 1920 for about two weeks in his trip to Holland. She had a palacial house beside the seashore. On the next February she had visited Shantiniketan staying there for almost two months. She used to learn Rabindra Sangeet and offered training to the students of Shantiniketan in Western music and Staff Notations. She used to live in a thatched house beside the way to Surul which she had constructed. The farewell ceremony had been elaborated in the ‘Shantiniketan’ (Chaitra, 1328) magazine –
… Miss Van Eeghen of Holland has left the Ashram on 20th Phalgun for her own country after living here for more than a month. She had invited friends in an evening gathering to her house before leaving. … Gurudev had presented the song ‘Madhobi Hotthat Kotha hote …’ in the occasion.
