This song was written on 3rd April, 1916 at Shantiniketan.
Asit Kumar Haldar, a painter who was in relation with Rabindranath (grandson of Sharatkumari), had written in his memoir -
... There was a piano in a room called 'Bichitra' (a clubhouse beside Jorasanko Thakurbari). Rabi-dada took Soumya and me to the clubhouse within the 'Lalbari'. He was singing two previously composed songs and further modifying them. The songs were 'Pathbhola E Pothik...' and 'Aloke kusum na diyo ...'. We did try to pick up the song although our effort could hardly satisfy him. His reaction was -
... Controlling my melody-queen is beyond your capacity, dear! It is Dinu only who can do that.
Asit Kumar Haldar wasn't an established singer, although he did perform in public quite often. But Soumendranath Tagore was a prolific singer with unquestionable talent. Moreover he was an acclaimed critical analyst of Rabindranath's songs. He was allowed to share a stage for a duet with the poet at a very young age. This, once again, is an example of his sensitiveness for his own songs. Mr Haldar must have erroneously mentioned the first song which should have read 'Aami Pathbhola Ek Pothik ...'.
