Notes: This song was composed for the dance-drama ‘Nobin’, first staged on 4th March, 1931 at Shantiniketan.
Savitri Govinda Krishnan was brought to Shantiniketan with a handsome scholarship from ‘Adyar’, a school run by Anny Besant, when she was kid of only twelve. However she was able to impress the poet with her singing skill in 1928. He had derived quite a few songs after listening to songs from Savitri. This was the first one and the story had been narrated by Savitri herself and well-documented by Amiya Bandyopadhyay in her book ‘Mohilader Smritite Rabindranath’ –
… It was elevenO’clock, tiffin time. Classes shall resume after luncheon. Savitri made her way to her hostel and began unloading her books when Hemlata-di, the Super, looked at her, said – ‘Savitri, Gurudev has sent an emissary for you, go with Banamali and see him.’
Savitri was hungry, tried to resist – ‘May I take my meal before!’
Hemlata-di was tender – ‘I’ll keep your meal shelved and covered. Now, my good girl, quickly go and see Gurudev, he has been awaiting for you.’
Displeased Savitri came to Uttarayan along with Banamali. Gurudev was sitting alone swinging his legs in anticipation. He said her as she arrived – ‘Savitri, sit down, sing a song for me.’ She was surprised as she had neither taken her bath nor meal and to sing at this time of the day. Gurudev was serious – ‘Quickly sing the song you had sung when we had first met at Adyar.’
Savitri started with the song, a Bhajan dedicated to goddess Meenakshee. ‘Go slow, slowly,’ – Gurudev asked her. After doing so he said – ‘Give me a piece of paper.’
But she had none. Now Gurudev seemed disturbed – ‘Is there nothing! Get it from the waste-paper basket, quick!’ She had fished out a large envelop from the basket. Gurudev started writing on the reverse side of it –
Baasonti hey bhubano-mohini …
He said – ‘Now replace your words ‘Meenakshee me mudam dehi me … etc.’ with mine and sing.’
Her voice was not in favour as her hunger was distracting – she confessed it with much hesitation. Gurudev assured her – ‘Don’t worry; Bouma has arranged dahi-vada, rasam for you. You can have as much you can, but complete the song first.’
Savitri started singing the Bengali words in South Indian tune – ‘Baasonti hey bhubano-mohini …’
Gurudev summoned Dinu-babu at once, who was sleeping. The big man appeared with his frowned facial expression. Gurudev asked Savitri to sing the song once again. Troubled face of Dinu-babu slowly changed to a sympathetic one. After the song was complete he was in tears, said –‘Rabi-da, where do you get these lyrics from?’
Gurudev replied – ‘This will be the first song of Nobin to be staged on The New Empire, Kolkata, and it would be sung by Savitri.’ …
