Notes: This song was written around February / March, 1915 (Phalgun, 1321B).
This song was adapted into the drama ‘Phalguni’ and the drama was read for the first time at Jorasanko Tthakurbari on 10th March, 1915. It had created great interest among the residents and was a huge celebration. According to Prashantakumar Pal Rs.102/- was the total expenditure, as large amount of flowers, samiyana, sheets of jute, hey etc. were brought in for the purpose. One of the accounting detail tells – ‘In the celebration held on 26th Phalgun a yellow coloured turban of Kranti Singh was mistaken as one of the festive associates and was torn apart, hence he was paid with 2||0.’
Moitreyee Devi has described the process of imparting dance lessons with this song in her book ‘Rabindranath : Grihe O Bishwe’ –
… There was a Japanese boy, I do not remember his name, with lively dancing style; the poet was teaching him the dance with this song ‘Basante phul gnaathlo aamar joyer maala …’ – he was trying several times to cope up with the way he was told to apply thrust with the word ‘gnaathlo’, but it was difficult to satisfy the poet. Or the motion with ‘Bidhlo hridoy nidoy baane’ – the poet was seated and giving directions to him – singing the the song several times. …
