This song has been one of the favourite songs of Rabindranath. It finds reference twice in his letters written to Ranu Adhkari (Lady Ranu Mukherjee later, 1906-2000). The first one reads -
... We seem to lose ourselves whenever there is a music playing within. As if the great Master of our being is revealed. This revelation is, in fact, liberation. That is the reason why I wish to tune the Veena within myself to the truth, I wish to try my hardest and rein in my mind, I wish to cleanse and refine my intellectual faculty - and that is why I wish to stall my earthly emotions and look away from personal achievements and all trivial desires - then only my instrument, thus tuned, shall start producing mellifluous melodies in the hands of my Master. ... As you know I often sing a song in the evening :
Beena baajao hey, mamo antare ...
He continues again on the same topic in around three months (Bhanusingher Patrabali) -
... I wish to inscribe the song, that I often sing in the evening -'Beena baajao hey, mamo antare ...', forever in your heart - so that your heart would remain completely preoccupied with it and not even a tempest shall be able to shake you. It is not only you whom I intend to say that, it is my earnest desire that I may position myself solemnly at the centre of my brimming soul devotedly, well-above the bustling thoroughfare and trifling emotions.
