The drama ‘Phalguni’ was enacted for the first time at the drama room of the Shantiniketan Ashram on 25th April 1915. Several persons have recalled their exquisite experience of listening to Rabindranath’s own voice in this drama where He had sung for a blind minstrel. Once the poet had expressed His inability to Pratima Devi –
… I possess no longer the voice of my youth, I do not know what to sing.
But Pratima Devi has written –
… We do not know how that voice may have sounded, yet the one people have experienced in Phalguni was just mesmerizing. The voice of the blind mistrel has keenly knocked the door of the intellectual audience.
Sita Debi, eldest daughter of Ramananda Chattopadhyay, in her ‘Punya-smriti’ has added –
… The song of the blind mistrel seems to be ringing still now.
Rathindranath in his ‘Pitri-smriti’ has elaborated –
… The scene where the blind misterl slowly progressed towards the dark cave while singing the song ‘Dhire bondhu dhire dhire …’ was particularly a matter of attraction for the audience. It was 1916, and still my father’s voice did have the reverberation. The audience could hardly restrain themselves as the song would fade out slowly and he would vanish behind the screen at the backstage. …
