NirmalKumari Mahalanabish had accompanied Rabindranath in his tour to Europe. She had mentioned in her book 'Kobir Songe Europe' –
… he had visited several cities in order to deliver his speeches. Each one of them had been particularly favourable for him to write a number of songs. A few among them, where images and songs created a fantasy, would remain stored within forever as treasured memory. I remember such an incidence in Stuttgart. The poet had visited a German family on 21st September evening on invitation. We too had accompanied him. They took us to the roof-top terrace from where one could have a view of the entire city. It appeared like the crimson of the dusk had painted the white hairs of the poet. It is hard to forget the exquisite manifestation of the nature. That day the poet wrote down – 'Bhaalo laagar shesh je na paai …' …
The song was later adapted to the present form with a few words amended. However, Nirmalkumari had provided another picture elsewhere –
… we had sailed from Constanţa in Romania on a small vessel and deboarded at Piraeus port at Athens in Greece. … Before reaching Greece the sunset had turned the water and the sky into crimson, as if 'Abir' had been spread all over. He had written this song 'Bhaalo laagar shesh je na paai prohor holo shesh …'. The beautiful picture emerges within whenever I listen to the song. White hairs of the poet too had turned crimson. …
