Notes: This song was written in the summer, 1926.
A communal violence had unleashed at Kolkata which saw a few people being killed. Chandrakanta Sur and Jatindranath Sur had been killed in such an incident. Probhankumar Mukhopadhyay, in his chronology of songs 'Geetabitan Kalanukromik Suchi' had opined that this song was written in memory of these two. However, Shantidev Ghosh in his book 'Rabindrasangeet' has written –
… Although the song 'Maranosagoropare tomra amar …' is applicable to any legendary personality in general, but this song was written with the memory of Dwijendranath, Gurudev's elder brother, at the back of the mind. He used to refer to this song as 'the song written after dada's death', when he failed to remember it. …
The same opinion has been expressed in 'Kabya O Sur' written by Kanika and Birendra Bandyopadhyay.
Dwijendranath had died on 19th January, 1926 and the song written five months after it. The time gap between the two seems to be a bit wider than the obvious. Furthermore, the use of the word 'tomra' (second person in plural) by Rabindranath indicates to the fact that it was not dedicated to a single individual. Probhatkumar's claim appears to be more reliable.
