Taal: Madhyamaan
Raag: Mishra-Behag-Purbi-Kafi
Written on: 1878
Published in: Bharati
Collection: Bhagna-hridoy
Swarabitan: 20
Notation by: Jyotirindranath Tagore
Notes: Rabindranath had been to Ahmadabad before his visit to England in May 1877. It was intended that he would be pursuing for a barrister or a ICS degree in England. He had stayed at his elder brother (Mej-dada), Satyendranath's official residence, a palatial building beside the Savarmati river. In the summer nights he used to roam about the roof of the building all alone. The first four lines of the song was written in a sleepless night without giving much importance to its meter. The following lines he had written much later, this time with the application of a genteel metering.
But the typical urge of a sleepless crazy boy or the ambience of the Savarmati was completely missing in these lines.
This comment was made by the poet in 'Jibonsmriti'.
According to Sri Subhas Chowdhury the tune appears to be composed by Jyotirindranath Tagore
