Rabindranath was habituated to transfer the melody of a newly composed song as soon as possible. He would have preferred if someone dependable was present; if not – anybody could serve the purpose. He would try his hardest to demonstrate each line a number of times so that should his own memory fails the tune would remain preserved with someone else. Such an example is found in the chronicle ‘Gaayok Rabindranath’ written by Jibanmoy Ray, poet and a teacher of the early stages of Shantiniketan –
… Once in the Puja vacation neither Dinu-babu nor Ajit [Kumar Chakraborty] were present in the Ashram. A building had been newly constructed; its name was something like Satishkutir or Satyakutir. For an unknown reason a large table-harmonium was lying inside. Pleasant morning and no one around; I had merrily engaged myself in indulging torture on the instrument with my inept musical ability. All on a sudden poet entered the room with a small notebook in his hand. I stood back immediately while He took the chair and started playing on the harmonium. He was singing ‘Prothom phuler paabo prosadkhaani …’. He was demonstrating the song over and over so that I could pick it correctly. I was still not spared after it had been finished. He started another one ‘Ogo shephaliboner moner kaamona …’. Both the songs have been only recent compositions. He continued to sing himself for not less than nine to ten times and directed me to do so numerous times before I was releaved. …
