Sudhira Basu, Nandalal Basu’s wife, has written in her memoire ‘Mohilader Smritite Rabindranath’ –

… Celebrating Basantotsava in Amrokunjo had been a tradition on Dol-Purnima. Each of the celebrations was a success with the grand presence of Rabindranath himself. However this time due to his ill health he was advised by doctors not to venture out and take part in celebrations.

Early in the morning that day children of the Ashram lead by Mrs.Vakeel, a Parsi lady of the Ashram started from Chatimtala and marched towards Uttarayan, where Gurudev used to stay. They were singing the song ‘Basanta jagrata dware …’. Their intension was to offer abir to Gurudev and extend their respect to him from a distance before he had awakened.

They had tip-toed to the door of Gurudev’s living room to find it opened. Awe-struck children saw him, in the faint light of the dawn, waiting with his characteristic white robes on. He extended his silent blessings as they tender their Pranam with flowers and abir.

Dinu-babu was summoned soon after to Uttarayan for transfer of a new song. In the evening Dinu-babu imparted his students the song – ‘Oi shuni jeno charonodhwani re …’.
