Shantidev Ghosh in his memoire ‘Rabindrasangeet’ has written –
… The determination, to embrace death, of Jatin Das, who was on a hunger-strike in Lahore prison in the year 1336B had created quite a furore among the Indian people. ‘Tapoti’ had been written in a very agonizing environment. Gurudev was busy with Ashram-dwellers in the rehearsal. Finally Jatin Das had succumbed to death on 13th September, 1929. Gurudev seemed to have experienced inexplicable pain when the news reached Shantiniketan. It was decided not to discontinue with the rehearsal in the evening. However he had been making errors while reading the script, and could not rectify despite his numerous attempts, he could not focus at all. At last the rehearsal had to be adjourned. He penned down on that night the song ‘Sarbo kharbotare dahe tabo krodhadaho …’. It was later included in the play ‘Tapoti’. Many of us may not know the unfathomable pain he had expressed through the song, although the truth must surely reveal once the fact behind is known. …
