Notes: This song was published in the year 1880 in a collection of poems 'Bhagna-hridoy' at his nineteen years of age. In this book for the first time a page for dedication has been included and this song has been used. Among two hundred and eight books through which his all literary works have been spread out only forty six have such a page. Seven of them have been dedicated to Kadambari Devi, wife of his elder brother, Jyotirindranath. This page indicates that the book is dedicated to 'Mrs.Hey...'. Lots of research has been done to decipher the code name. The name of the main witch in the Macbeth is Heckety. It was later known that Rabindranath used to call his sister in law, Kadambari, this name in order to ridicule her. Researchers now are almost certain that this 'Mrs.Hey...' is nobody else but Kadambari.

This song had ten lines at the time of its first publication which was reduced to eight when it was first sung in the Maaghotsava some three months later. A few sensitive and personal words were either replaced or deleted. It was removed from the dedication page of the later edition of 'Bhagna-hridoy'. Rabindranath seemingly remained touchy for this song all through his life. He had changed the tune at least for three times at different times. The raag indication for the song was Alahiya Bilaval which he later changed to Chhayanat. It is not known who did the first notation, the second one, according to Prashanta Kumar Pal was done by Indira Debi, and the third one was done by Kankali Charan Sen. The song was included with the third notation in the third part of Brahma Sangeet. Despite the song being a Brahma Sangeet it has been included in the 'Prem' section of the Geetabitan.
