The tune of this song was derived from a bhajan in thumri style –
Koi kachhu kahare dil lagare,
Tan hi laga man hi laga,
Bich mein nahi kachhu jaga re.
Rabindranath had listed to this song from Savitri Govinda Krishnan, a student of Shantiniketan. Two more sections were added to from the lyric of the song ‘Tumi kichhu diye jaay bedona hote bedane …’. However the theme of this song is completely different from the original one.

Tumi kichhu diye jaao mor praane gopone go – Phuler gandhe bnaashir gaane, mormoromukhorito pabone. Tumi kichhu niye jaao bedona hote bedone – Je mor haasite oshru haasite leen, je baani nirob noyone.
