Notes: While composing this song Rabindranath was on a boat sailing across a river to serve the purpose of a jamindar.

The first manuscript of this song was found in the notebook named 'Majumdar punthi'. The poem named 'Manas-pratima' and the first line was 'Tumi sondhyar megh shanto sudur'. The manuscript was inscribed with the words 'Chalanbil, jhor-brishti'. It indicates that it was raining torrentially while this poem having such a serene description of an evening was being written, although, the poem contains none of its indications. In fact, its character appears to be so dry that once the poet himself asked a batch of singers to sing this song in order to represent the season 'Hemanta'. This song happens to be one of the popular songs in 'Prem' parjaay. Amita Sen, daughter of Kshitimohan Sen writes in her book 'Nritya-rachanay Rabindranath' -

... Once in Shantiniketan ladies depicted Ashram-janani, Ashram-kanya and the six seasons. They had sung six songs on the stage were Rabindranath was present along with some other professors.

They could not find a song suitable for 'Hemanta'. Rabindranath had helped them and suggested the song 'Tumi sondhyar meghomaala...'. Afterwards we had had a series of songs for the season.

Through this incidence the absence of songs for 'Hemanta' might have struck him and hence immediately a number of songs were added in the collection 'Nataraj'.
