We provide the meaning of Tagore songs in English on the basis of visitor's request. Translating a Tagore song is very difficult, hope you will agree. We provide this service according to our capability, feelings and knowledge which may differ with others. We do not wish to claim these as serious translations as the site has its focus on the better reproduction of the songs. Translations of regional feelings are never an easy proposition, that too in the form of a verse. Hence we chose to go for a form that is adaptable and equally lucid to the viewers across the globe. We give additional explanations for the typical Indian and Bengali words that may cause confusion. We even attach images where words are found insufficient. The language is deliberately kept as uncomplicated as possible. This service is absolutely free for all.

1. Poem: THE NIGHT is upon me. My desires that wandered all day have come back to my heart like The murmur of the sea in the still evening air. One lonely lamp is burning in my house in the dark. The silence is in my blood. I shut my eyes and see in my heart the beauty that is beyond all forms. 2. Crossing: IN THE NIGHT when noise is tired the murmur of the sea fills the air. The vagrant desires of the day come back to their rest round the lighted lamp. Love's play is stilled into worship, life's stream touches the deep, and the world of forms comes to its nest in the beauty beyond all forms. - Translated by Rabindranath Tagore
It is the onset of midnight within my heart, quiet is the ambience. Rumbling of the distant ocean, intermittently reaches me. All desires creep back into mind, intense darkness deepens out – At a remote corner of the core - a lamp is glowing. Eternal manifestation and splendour converge, unrest calms down. Brisk and turbulent waves pacified with the ocean. Silent chants of the secret words within the heart – Serenity, Tranquillity, Stability, Whenever closed eyes beam inwards - emerges an exquisite idol. - Translated by Anjan Ganguly
Dark night has descended to the heart – no more noise. Intermittently, I can only hear the roar of the faraway ocean. All the desires return, its pitch dark outside – A sole lamp burns secretly within. Grace meets endless beneficence, the play is over. Nimble, restless waves have subsided in the ocean. Silent hymn of peace plays within. Seeing the formless glow within, my eyes are blessed. - Translated by Shailesh Parekh
