We provide the meaning of Tagore songs in English on the basis of visitor's request. Translating a Tagore song is very difficult, hope you will agree. We provide this service according to our capability, feelings and knowledge which may differ with others. We do not wish to claim these as serious translations as the site has its focus on the better reproduction of the songs. Translations of regional feelings are never an easy proposition, that too in the form of a verse. Hence we chose to go for a form that is adaptable and equally lucid to the viewers across the globe. We give additional explanations for the typical Indian and Bengali words that may cause confusion. We even attach images where words are found insufficient. The language is deliberately kept as uncomplicated as possible. This service is absolutely free for all.

We are ready to accept such works from anyone who is willing to share with this site. The Editor holds the rights to accept or reject any write-up.

ON THAT NIGHT when the storm broke open my door.
I did not know that you entered my room through the ruins,
For the lamp was blown out, and it became dark;
I stretched my arms to the sky in search of help.
I lay on the dust waiting in the tumultuous dark and I knew not that storm was your own banner.
When the morning came I saw you standing upon the emptiness that was spread over my house.

- Translated by Rabindranath Tagore

The night when the tempest ravaged my doors –
I didn’t know you had come to my abode.
The world went black, off went the lamp,
Stretched my uncertain hands skyward.
I remain tentative in the dark, all dream alike,
The tempest was your ensign – I knew not.
Surprised, I find you standing in the dawn
Up on the void that had choked my abode.

- Translated by Anjan Ganguly

The night my door was broken by a storm,
I did not know you had come to my home.
Everything was dark, the lamp extinguished,
Raising arms towards the sky,
Thinking it was a dream, I remained lying down in the dark.
How would I know that the storm was your victory banner?
Looking up, I found,
You were standing in the heart of wilderness at my vacant door.

- Translated by Shailesh Parekh
