Like in many Bengali families, he was introduced to Rabindra Sangeet through his family from infancy. He started singing these songs since as early as he can remember. By the time he was around 6 years of age, he started performing in Durga Puja programs of our residential complex, and also started attending classes at the music institute "Indira". He continued there for a little over two years, during which time he was placed 1st and 2nd in the yearly exams there. After this, he had to discontinue for some time due to logistical reasons.
In the meantime, he was introduced to various other genres of music through his family and his elder brother in particular. Therefore, by the time he was in high school, he had started to sing Shyamasangeet, Baul, Bhajans, and Bollywood music. When he was in class 7 or 8, he started learning kheyal from his Guru, Sri Ramapada Nandi, himself a disciple of eminent artists, including Sri Krishnachandra Dey. He continued his training with him on a regular basis for about 8 years till 1999. After this, as he had to move away from his hometown, the training became an occasional affair, whenever he would get time on his visits home.
Besides his performances in the Durga Puja programs at our housing society, he has performed in a chorus playback song in Tarun Majumdar's "Poth o Prasad". This came about through his school, as this involved a number of children singing "Praano bhoriye trisha horiye" along with Arundhati Hom Chaudhuri, and a group of children were selected from our school for this purpose. Unfortunately, the song was edited out in the final version of the movie, he believes.
He also performed in college and university events during 1996 - 2001, and in events organized by Bengali expatriate associations during 2001 – 2006. There was a break in his performances and personal practice of music for a few years after this, but he slowly resumed around 2011 with some performances in his company, and at Durga Puja events in Bangalore. In 2014 he had the opportunity to perform a 2-hour solo program at "Good Morning Akash" on national television. He is continuing his music practice at present in Bangalore with like-minded friends and artists in Bangalore, and continuing the performances at informal/semi-formal events, including Durga Puja events.
