The tradition of dance associated with songs was slowly introduced in the year 1908, when Sharodotsav was staged. Amita Sen, daughter of Kshitimohan Sen, has written in her book, 'Nritya-rachonay Rabindranath' -
The rehearsal for 'Sharodotsav' had started on the first floor of the building known as 'Dwarika'. Not only the songs, Din-da used to teach us the dance movements too. Then Rabindranath would appear in person and sing with us in a lively manner. In order to liven up expressions like -
Keyapaatar nouko gore
Saajiye debo phule
Taal-dighite bhaasiye deb
Cholbe dule dule.
- he used to put his hands together to look like a boat, then as of holding the boat with the left hand and tenderly place imaginary flowers to decorate it, and finally holding the boat with both hands - rocking them sidewise to show wagging movement of the boat. He sang - Cholbe dule dule. In this way we have slowly learnt exclusive dance movements. ... We used to imitate motions of a Baul, not that each movement of the group must be synchronized, it was purely dancing merrily. Often the poet used to join us and enjoy.
