Song of Rabindranath Tagore

English translation of Tagore song megher kole rod hesechhe; please find it below.

We provide the meaning of Tagore songs in English on the basis of visitor's request. Translating a Tagore song is very difficult, hope you will agree. We provide this service according to our capability, feelings and knowledge which may differ with others. We do not wish to claim these as serious translations as the site has its focus on the better reproduction of the songs. Translations of regional feelings are never an easy proposition, that too in the form of a verse. Hence we chose to go for a form that is adaptable and equally lucid to the viewers across the globe. We give additional explanations for the typical Indian and Bengali words that may cause confusion. We even attach images where words are found insufficient. The language is deliberately kept as uncomplicated as possible. This service is absolutely free for all.

We are ready to accept such works from anyone who is willing to share with this site. The Editor holds the rights to accept or reject any write-up.

The sun smiles from the cradle of clouds,
Rain seems over, what a joy.
Today is our holiday, O dear, what a joy.
Hard to decide what to do next, which woods to explore – losing steps,
Which ground to run about – together with all the boys,
What a joy.
We’ll make boats from KEYA leaves, with floral decorations,
Set them sail on TAAL-DIGHI, they should rock and move.
We play on the flute, with the shepherd boy, follow grazing cattle,
We roll on the CHAMPA-forest floor, body covered by pollen,
What a joy.

- Translated by Anjan Ganguly

The sun smiles from the lap of clouds,
The clouds have scattered, oh what fun!
Today is our holiday, my friend,
Today is our holiday, oh what fun!
It is hard to decide what to do next,
In which woods should I lose my way,
In which grounds should I run about
Along with all my friends, oh what fun!
We'll make boats out of keya leaves,
And decorate them with flowers,
We'll set them a-sail in ponds and tanks,
They'll float around swaying from side to side.
Along with the cow-herd, the cows
We'll take to graze while playing the flute
And cover ourselves in the pollen of flowers
By rolling around in the champa forest, oh what fun!

- Translated by Nilanjana Gulati
